 Derbyshire Advanced Motorcyclists

Why take an Advanced Test?
You've been riding  a bike for some time now and are enjoying the pleasures of biking, open roads, freedom from traffic jams and public transport. You also know the pitfalls of riding in today's traffic: discourteous drivers who carve you up, the "sorry, I didn't see you" brigade, Sunday drivers and absent-minded shoppers. Now's the time to think about your own riding style. By taking the Advanced test, you can raise your own riding standards and learn how to get the best from yourself and your bike.

How do I reach Test standard?
Naturally it's best to take expert advice before putting yourself up for the Advanced test. This is where Derbyshire Advanced Motorcyclists can help. We've all taken the IAM test and can tell you what to expect. When you join the group as an associate, you are allocated an observer, an experienced group member who will help and guide you over a series of rides. An observed ride is conducted along similar lines to a test, lasting 1 to 1½ hours and covering a range of roads: town riding, country lanes, fast A roads and motorways. There are frequent breaks during each ride so that the observer can comment on your technique. At the end of the ride the observer will give a thorough debrief and maybe ask you to concentrate on a couple of points before the next ride. When the observer thinks you are ready he will arrange a pre-test session with another observer.
