This page starts from 23 Feb 2003, with some webcam clips of potential interest. The equipment consists of a Labtec webcam (less than £20 from PC World) connected via a USB cable to an Acer laptop (Celeron 1.2 GHz 256 MB SDRAM) running Windows XP. The webcam is mounted on the fascia in front of the steering wheel using sticky-backed Velcro. With a USB extender cable I can keep the laptop in the boot. Battery life is not a problem, as it is fed mains voltage via an inverter from a 12 volt socket in the boot. So far I have not managed to capture sound at the same time, but read on...

A dangerous road

23 Feb 2003. Driving home from church, my wife comments on the flashing blue lights visible over the hedgerows. I compliment her on her forward observation, but we both know what it means - what I regard as one of the most dangerous roads in Derbyshire, my commuter route, has claimed another victim.

Traffic calming on a housing estate

March 2003. This is a German suburb,  which illustrates how well-designed road constrictions, with trees planted in some of the chicanes, can provide visually appealing traffic control.
